MY FIRST NIGHT OUT

Since moved to Prague I only work and sleep (and workout and cook, haha), but I didn’t really took advantage of all the cultural possibilities in the city, as I planned. And there are A LOT!!!

A friend of mine, who I think has the same music-loving spirit as I do, took me out last Saturday night and by that he has given me an amazing gift. It was such an amazing experience.

He took me to a Queen revival show by a band called Queenie. Ha. I’ve never been a fan of revival bands. I love originality and I think nobody can be as good as my number one band ever (yeah, Queen it is). You can be good, but I do not think you can ever compare to the original. On the other side I love the fact that there still are people who love this kind of music and do so much for keeping it alive.
Let me tell you, those guys were AMAZING. I’ve never experienced anything like that. There was so much energy coming out from that massive crowd of people behind me (scary!) and so much energy pouring down from the stage (super exciting) and I felt so surrounded by all that energy and I was swimming in it and was sucked into it. I hate crowds. I can’t stand when strange people are touching me, some of them drunk, some really sweaty, putting their hands in front of my face, breathing behind my neck, ew, I just HATE it, okay??? Maybe that was the reason why I have never visited any live concert. Martin talked me into going to the very front of the crowd, right in front of the stage, and he promised to stay right behind me, so the crown can’t crush me :D It took him a while to get me there (sorry, it was my first concert, didn’t know what to expect and was scared like crazy!), but I am SO THANKFUL he didn’t give up on me! :D I had a great time and I enjoyed it a lot.
Back at my old job, my boss used to say that I am the second biggest Queen fan in Europe, while he is the first :) Well, I wouldn’t really say THAT, but I love Queen since I was a little girl and I got my first walkman :) When Freddie died, I was six years old, and I remember that day as if it was just yesterday. My mom was sitting in the living room crying, I came to her and asked what is going on and she just answered: “Freddie Mercury died.” I have NO IDEA who that is, but I sat down to her and started crying too. My mom loves Queen for ages and I simple had to start listening to them too. At that age I knew no english, but I could sing every single song just phonetically (you know how little kids sing when they do not understand the lyrics, right?). As soon as I started learning english, I learned them for real. I had the same thing with ABBA :) but Queen is more special to me. We had this vinyl disc, it was A Kind Of Magic, the one with the “cartoon” cover and me and my brother loved it and we had to play it every day before bed.
Being “the second biggest Queen fan in Europe” :) I was really hesitating at first and I was not whether I should go or not. I was skeptical and scared too. I had no idea what to expect and I really didn’t wanna spend the night by listening to totally ruined Queen songs. But I was curious at the same time, PLUS I really didn’t wanna call of another meeting with Martin, as I did a few times before and felt really bad about it.
So the show was suppose to start at 9pm, we got in about an hour earlier, because we wanted to secure ourselves spot in front. Glad we did, this place was CROWDED! (okay, not as much as a real Queen concert probably would, but crowded enough to make me anxious. The leader of the band is super cute Freddie lookalike, his gestures, facial expresions, moves, everything was so precise, he really mastered it. Plus, his voice rocked for such a young singer. The rest of the band (there are 5 member total, which confused me at first, but Martin just stated that “this Freddie probably didn’t learned how to play a piano yet,”) was great too. I have to admit that I didn’t pay much visual attention to the rest of the band, except for “Brian May,” I couldn’t get my eyes of his hands when he was playing solos. I myself can only play a few chords :D which is good enough for a family campfire :D but I always admired everyone who can play a guitar like that. I was captivated. Also the audience was amazing and thank to Martin, nobody was bumping into me :D (except this one girl that was dancing next to me and was probably a little more drunk than she should be, haha), I could tell that everybody in the club had a great time and the band enjoyed it as well. People were singing, dancing, I sang A LOT, it was not possible not to! (The only thing that I did not like was their version of Is This The World We Created? from The Works, which is my MOST FAVE QUEEN SONG ever and I just hate when this one is done by someone else, haha, but it was not bad in any way, it is just my problem).

I would (and I will) definitely visit their show again. In my opinion music like this will never get old, people will love it tomorrow with the same intensity as they did 20 years ago. Queen to me is immortal and I am so happy we have bands like Queenie to keep them alive and introduce them to younger people who never had a chance to grow with it as I did. Good revivals are IMHO hard to find. Queenie IS a good revival band.

Check out their website, facebook page or Youtube channel, so you can see what I am talking about and tell me what was or still is your favorite band when you were kids!
